Migraine-Related Terms
Agonist
A chemical that mimics or copies the actions of another chemical.
Aura
A warning signal of migraine experienced by approximately 20% of sufferers. Aura may be a visual (eg, seeing flashing lights or zig-zag lines), auditory, or other sensory or physical disturbance. Aura occurs before the actual headache.
Dilation
A condition in which a body cavity, tube, artery, pupil of the eye, or opening is enlarged or stretched as a result of a normal physiological process or because of disease or a medical procedure.
Onset
The first noticeable symptoms. For most, head pain is the first sign of a migraine attack.
Prodromes
Warning signals that can occur well in advance (hours or days) of the onset of symptoms.
Serotonin
A substance that occurs naturally in the body. It has been found that the serotonin level in a migraine sufferer's brain first rises, then falls dramatically at the onset of an attack, provoking a theory that serotonin plays an important role in migraine.
Trigger
A specific event or substance that directly leads to an event in some patients. Common triggers include, but are not limited to, food, activity, light, sounds, smells, caffeine, nicotine, certain medications, and changes in diet.
